Killevin Cemetery, Argyll, Scotland
Visited September 2016
This cemetery, still in use, is just beside Crarae Gardens on the west bank of Loch Fyne in Argyll, Scotland. It was the site of an old church, now long gone. The antiquity of the site can be seen from an 8th or 9th century decorated pillar which was built into a wall of the cemetery, although that's been taken away to a local church now.
The oldest monument in the graveyard is the ruined mausoleum dating to 1707, for the Campbells of Knockbuie, which is in shown to the right of the first photo below. There are a number of markers dating to the 18th century still extant in the graveyard, as well as graves dating up to the modern day. There are 3 Commonwealth War Graves in the cemetery.
The site was excavated a few years ago by archaeologists for the National Trust, and the report can be found here as a PDF.
The cemetery is accessed easily from the Crarae Gardens carpark, so if you are in the area visiting the gardens it's very easy to pop down to have a look at the cemetery too.
