Clachan Duich Graveyard, Morvich, Wester Ross
Visited July 2019
Morvich is a tiny settlement, near Kintail on the west coast of Scotland. This graveyard, surrounding the ruins of St Dubhthanch's Church, is the traditional burial place of Clan Macrae. It lies on an ancient coffin road which made its way here from Inchvuill via the Falls of Glomach, which the dead were carried along to their final resting place.
Although the ruined church was dedicated in the 11th century, most of the graves here are from the 19th and 20th centuries, and burials are still being made today. A few older burials do exist, but most are weathered beyond reading. Inside the church is where the clan chiefs were buried, and there's quite a nice memorial to them.
Not worth a special trip but if you're in the area, perhaps on the way to Skye or Eilean Donan Castle, or about to walk part of the coffin road (without a coffin I hope!), it's worth stopping off. Be sure to walk up the small hill to the war memorial, the views are simply spectacular.
